"The Ghost" is the first episode of the fourth season of the American television series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., based on the Marvel Comics organization S.H.I.E.L.D. (Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement, and Logistics Division), revolving around the character of Phil Coulson and his team of S.H.I.E.L.D. agents as they deal with the enhanced individuals Quake and Ghost Rider. It is set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), sharing continuity with the films of the franchise. The episode was written by Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen, and directed by Billy Gierhart.
Clark Gregg reprises his role as Coulson from the film series, and is joined by series regulars Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet as Quake, Iain De Caestecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, Henry Simmons, and John Hannah. A fourth season was ordered in March 2016, with Gabriel Luna as Ghost Rider being a major introduction as the series began to deal with mystical and supernatural elements leading up to the release of the film Doctor Strange. Mallory Jansen and Lilli Birdsell are also introduced as major recurring characters for the season. With the episode, the series started airing at the later time of 10:00 pm, allowing it to be darker and more mature. The episode is the first in the first "pod" of episodes for the season, subtitled Ghost Rider.
