The Passion (also known as The Passion: New Orleans) is an American music television special, which was broadcast by Fox from New Orleans, Louisiana on March 20, 2016. Based on the original BBC TV programme Manchester Passion and the Dutch franchise of the same name, it was a contemporary retelling of the Passion of Jesus Christ set to popular music with a mixture of live and pre-recorded segments. The special was hosted and narrated by Tyler Perry, and starred musicians Jencarlos Canela, Prince Royce, Trisha Yearwood, Chris Daughtry, and Seal.
The special received mixed reviews; critics noted that some of the song selections had weak thematics and context in relation to the story of Christ, while the presentation of the special was compared to Super Bowl halftime shows by some. The contributions of Tyler Perry received mixed reviews, with critics characterizing his narration as being restrained, and noting that the crucifixion of Jesus was presented solely through graphic dialogue and was not visually depicted. Shortcomings were also acknowledged in the special's overall presentation and structure, such as the use of pre-recorded numbers, and that its structure was dissimilar to that of a traditional stage musical as was implied in promotion (due to the recent trend of live broadcasts of Broadway musicals, such as Fox's own Grease: Live). Particular praise was directed towards the vocal performances of Seal, and how the presentation was received by the live audience.
