Cann began his junior career with the Peterborough Petes of the OHL in the 2005-06 season. Cann was the backup goalie for the Petes, and in 20 games, he posted a 16-2-2 record, posting a 2.65 GAA and a save percentage of .912.

The Petes began a rebuilding mode in the 2006-07, and with the departure of goaltender David Shantz, Cann was named the starter of the team, and appeared in 62 games, as he had a record of 23-32-5 with a GAA of 3.69 and a .909 save percentage, as the Petes failed to qualify for the post-season. In 2007-08, the Petes were still in rebuilding mode, as Cann had a 20-28-3 record, a 3.59 GAA and a .906 save percentage, as Peterborough qualified for the playoffs. In five playoff games, Cann had a 1-4 record with a 3.97 GAA and a .902 save percentage as Peterborough was eliminated in the first round.

Cann began the 2008-09 season with Peterborough, however, he was traded to the London Knights very early into the season. Cann was 5-5-0 with a 3.08 GAA and a .926 save percentage with the Petes, before posting a 30-10-1 record with a 2.51 GAA and a .917 save percentage with the Knights, helping London qualify for the playoffs. Cann had a 9-4 playoff record with a 2.83 GAA and a .912 save percentage, as he helped the Knights qualify for the Western Conference finals, before losing to the Windsor Spitfires.
