Who's The Murderer (Chinese: 明星大侦探; pinyin: Míngxīng dà zhēntàn) is a Chinese variety program on Mango TV. It is the spin-off of the South Korean JTBC program Crime Scene. The show features the main cast of He Jiong and Sa Beining, as well as resident guests Gui Gui, Wang Ou, Da Zhangwei and Bai Jingting. The first season consists of a prologue and 12 episodes, airing from March 27 to June 19, 2016. The show is currently airing its second season every Sunday at 20:00.
In a "prologue" (usually aired as the preview for an upcoming episode), the cast is introduced to the settings and suspects of a murder case for the new episode. The cast then chooses their role in the episode, as a particular suspect or the detective. Except the detective, each person is given detailed information about the suspect they are portraying, including their personalities, alibi, relationship to the victim and other suspects, history, criminal motive, etc. Every suspect can conceal information until explicitly questioned by other suspects or the detective, but only the criminal can lie.
At the start of the game, the cast is introduced to a mock-up crime scene with the ultimate goal of figuring out the murderer from among the suspects present. Each episode follows a similar progressing pattern: (1) everyone introduces their characters and shares their whereabouts when the murder took place, (2) the cast is divided into two groups and investigates on-site for ten minutes, (3) the cast regroups for a briefing and each person shares the evidence they found and their suspicions, (3) the detective publicly votes the suspect he or she thinks is the most probable murderer, (4) the entire cast investigates on-site for a second time, occasionally stopping for discussions for the suspects to explain themselves or to voice their suspicions. The detective will also call for one-on-one interrogations. Finally, (5) the cast goes for the final vote, which is conducted in private. The suspect with the highest number of votes is put into a "jail" and if he or she is indeed the murderer, the cast wins and they receive a gold bar each. If the arrested suspect is not the murderer, the actual criminal is pronounced the winner and wins all the gold bars.
In the second season, minor changes have been made to the format of the show. The detective is no longer allowed to make his or her first vote public, as to not influence the cast on their early suspicions. At the end of the game, if the right suspect was voted as the criminal, only those who have voted correctly can receive their gold bars.
