Characteristics
Type Magical beast

In the Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game, a wolfwere is a wolf that polymorphs into a quadrupedal human shape and a humanoid-wolf hybrid, often retaining the bipedal stance.

The wolfwere first appeared in the adventure module The Lost Caverns of Tsojcanth (1982), and in the original Monster Manual II (1983).

The wolfwere appeared in second edition in the Monstrous Compendium Volume One (1989), and reprinted in the Monstrous Manual (1993). The greater wolfwere appeared for the Ravenloft setting in the adventure module Feast of Goblyns (1990), and in the Monstrous Compendium Ravenloft Appendix (1991).

The wolfwere is a completely different creature from the lycanthropic werewolf. Wolfweres are a distinct species, whereas werewolves are created from the spread of the magical curse of lycanthropy. Wolfweres typically transform from their wolf form to their human or hybrid form on a day when a moon is not present. Wolfweres have appeared in numerous Dungeons & Dragons video games. In the Ravenloft campaign setting, a wolfwere is one of the setting's Darklords.
