McAfrika

The McAfrika was a burger sold by McDonald's in Norway and "traded" as a Limited Edition Olympic Games Burger. It attracted significant public criticism as a result of its name and the timing of its launch.

The McAfrika sandwich contained beef, cheese, and tomatoes wrapped in pita bread. McDonald's claimed it was based upon an authentic African recipe.

The McAfrika was released in 2002, just as a major famine was occurring in Malawi, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Lesotho and Swaziland. The name of the burger was immediately criticized for being grossly insensitive, especially since it was released in Norway, one of the richest nations in the world.

Norwegian Church Aid and the Norwegian Red Cross, which were both conducting humanitarian operations in southern Africa at the time, said that McDonald's decision was insensitive, crass and ill-considered. Linn Aas-Hansen said that "it's inappropriate and distasteful to launch a hamburger called McAfrika when large portions of southern Africa are on the verge of starvation." CARE Norway demanded that McDonald's withdraw the burger. In particular, Norwegian Church Aid protested the McAfrika burgers by giving out "catastrophe crackers" to customers entering Norwegian McDonald's outlets.

Support for McDonald's came from the organization African Youth in Norway who appreciated Africa name being used in a positive manner instead of as a continent of war and poverty.

McDonald's did not withdraw the burger, instead offering it until September 2002, just as planned in its campaign. However, as a conciliatory gesture, it allowed aid agencies to put up posters and donation boxes in McDonald's restaurants where the McAfrika was being sold. Furthermore, McDonald's spokesperson Margaret Brusletto apologized for the timing of the launch, saying "We acknowledge that we have chosen an unfortunate time to launch this new product."

The McAfrika was re-launched in 2008 to promote the 2008 Beijing Olympics for a short time, and attracted a similarly negative response.

McArabia

imageMcArabia Grilled Chicken/Kofta

The McArabia is a pita bread sandwich available at some McDonald's outlets in Arab countries and Pakistan. It is known as the Grilled Chicken foldover in Singapore and Malaysia, as McOriental in Spain, France and Holland, the McTurco in Turkey,Greek Mac in Greece and Cyprus, and as the McKebab in Israel. The sandwich was originally made to meet Middle Eastern local taste.

The Sandwich was introduced as the Greek Mac in 2001 in Greece.

The McArabia was introduced in Saudi Arabia and UAE on March 2003 due to a sharp fall of profits in 2002, and declared a permanent product, due to boycotts on American brands and restaurants over the war in Iraq and claiming that the ingredients were not from local vendors. The first version of the sandwich used grilled chicken with pita bread which was imported from the UK for the first week, then switched to local bakers. In 2004 the Kofta variant was added.

McChicken

image McDonald's McChicken

The McChicken is a chicken sandwich sold by the international fast-food chain McDonald's. The sandwich consists of a toasted wheat bun, a breaded chicken patty, shredded lettuce, and mayonnaise.

The sandwich, originally introduced in 1980, proved to be a sales disappointment and was later replaced with the highly successful Chicken McNuggets. But following the success of McNuggets, the McChicken was reintroduced in 1988. But again, McDonald's removed the McChicken from its menus in the United States on September 26, 1996, and it was replaced with the Crispy Chicken Deluxe, which was part of McDonald's ill-fated Deluxe line of sandwiches. But once again, the McChicken was brought back on January 31, 1998, due to overwhelming letters and petitions. Additionally, in the United States, the sandwich is somewhat smaller than it was previously, as it is now on the Dollar Menu & More (previously just the Dollar Menu), which offers various food products starting at US$1.00.

The meat of the McChicken sandwich used to be 50% white meat and 50% dark meat. Viewed in April 2015, McDonald's website states that the McChicken contains a blend of dark and white meat chicken.

In certain regions and at specific McDonald's franchises, the McChicken is adapted to appeal to the local population's tastes.

When the McChicken was reintroduced to McDonald's menu in 1998 as a smaller sandwich, it was initially marketed as the Cajun (Style) McChicken. The name was changed back to just McChicken around 2000, alongside the change to a milder, softer chicken patty.

In the south and southwestern parts of the US, the Hot 'n Spicy variant is sold. It originated as a nationwide menu item in January 2006, but by June of that year, McDonald's confirmed it had been discontinued due to soft sales. In March 2013, McDonald's re-introduced the Hot 'n Spicy across the country to what was then called the Dollar Menu. In November 2013, as part of the chain's Dollar Menu & More revamp, the McChicken (and the Hot 'n Spicy) could be ordered as a Buffalo Ranch McChicken, which is a McChicken with Buffalo and Ranch sauce instead of mayonnaise, or a Bacon Buffalo Ranch, which is a Buffalo Ranch McChicken with bacon. As of June 2015, the Hot 'n Spicy is no longer available nationally.

McGriddles

imageMcGriddles

McGriddles are a type of breakfast sandwich sold by the international fast-food restaurant chain McDonald's. Introduced in 2003, it is available in the following markets: United States, Turkey, Canada, Poland, Japan, Guatemala, Mexico, the Philippines, and New Zealand (for a limited time).

The "standard" McGriddles sandwich consists of fried bacon, egg and American cheese served on a small French toast made with maple flavoring. Both the top and bottom griddle cakes are embossed with the McDonald's logo.

When McDonald's launched its all-day breakfast menu in October 2015, McGriddles were initially excluded from the menu, but the chain would eventually feature the item on the all-day breakfast menu in September 2016.

McMuffin

imageMcDonald's Egg McMuffin

The McMuffin is a family of breakfast sandwiches in various sizes and configurations, sold by the fast-food restaurant chain McDonald's. Introduced in 1972, the Egg McMuffin is the signature sandwich invented by Herb Peterson.

In the US and Canada the standard McMuffin consists of a slice of Canadian bacon, a griddle-fried egg, and a slice of American cheese on a toasted and buttered English muffin. The round shape of the egg is made by cooking it in a white plastic ring surrounded by an outer metal structure.

The McDonald's egg sandwich was invented in 1972. Former McDonald's President Ray Kroc wrote that Herb Peterson and his assistant, Donald Greadel, the operator of a Santa Barbara, California franchise (located at 3940 State Street), asked Kroc to look at something, without giving details because it was:

Peterson had first presented the Egg McMuffin at the Santa Barbara franchise without the knowledge of McDonald's Corporate, which at the time served only lunch and dinner at all their locations. When Corporate discovered the unauthorized breakfast offerings, it initially reprimanded him and threatened him with a number of penalties for breaking the franchise agreement.

The first McDonald's Corporate-authorized Egg McMuffin was served at the Belleville, New Jersey McDonald's in 1972.

In the 1970s, some McDonald's restaurants served Egg McMuffins all day as a promotion.

In several cities, such as Hong Kong, Sausage & Egg McMuffins are served around the clock, because of the prominent use of the egg in meals other than breakfast in those countries; the muffins and sausage patty there are softer than the usual variant to suit local customers. Until 2015, US restaurants usually restricted the item to the breakfast menu. This is mainly because the grill temperature required to cook beef patties is significantly different from the temperature at which eggs are cooked, according to Herb Peterson in a special episode of Unwrapped. Because of this, beef patties and Egg McMuffins cannot be cooked on the same grill, meaning that to keep Egg McMuffins available all day, a store would have to have a separate grill dedicated specifically to Egg McMuffins; this would either mean sacrificing a grill that could have been used for beef patties or buying an additional grill.

McRib

image McDonald's McRib

The McRib is a barbecue-flavored pork product sandwich periodically sold by the international fast-food restaurant chain McDonald's. It was first introduced to the McDonald's menu in 1981, following test marketing the year before.

After poor sales, it was removed from the menu in 1985. McRib was reintroduced in 1989, staying on the menu until 2005 in many countries. Since 2006, it has generally been made available for a short time each year in most markets where it is sold, typically during the fall season, although is a permanent menu item at McDonald's restaurants in Germany.

McRib consists of a restructured boneless pork patty shaped like a rib, barbecue sauce, onions, and pickles served on a 5 1⁄2 inches (14 cm) roll. Despite its name, it is primarily composed of pork shoulder meat, according to McDonald's.

The McRib Jr. was available briefly in 2000. This version replaced the roll with a standard hamburger bun, and was served with two pickles and a smaller pork patty.

The McRib made its debut in the U.S. in 1981 as a limited-time item. It was developed by McDonald's first Executive Chef Rene Arend, who invented Chicken McNuggets in 1979.

"The McNuggets were so well received that every franchise wanted them," said Arend in a 2009 interview. "There wasn’t a system to supply enough chicken. We had to come up with something to give the other franchises as a new product. So the McRib came about because of the shortage of chickens." It was his inspiration to shape the McRib patty "like a slab of ribs," despite the fact that a round patty would have been cheaper to manufacture and serve on standard hamburger buns.

Quarter Pounder

imageQuarter Pounder

The Quarter Pounder is a hamburger sold by international fast food chain McDonald's, so named for containing a patty with a precooked weight of a quarter of a pound (113.4 g). It was first introduced in 1972. In 2013, the Quarter Pounder was expanded to represent a whole line of hamburgers that replaced the company's discontinued Angus Third Pounder hamburger. In 2015, McDonald's increased the precooked weight to 4.25 oz (120.5 g).

The Quarter Pounder was created by Al Bernardin, a franchise owner and former McDonald's Vice President of product development, in Fremont, California, in 1971. Bernardin had moved to Fremont in 1970 after purchasing two company-owned McDonald's restaurants.

Bernardin began experimenting with new menu items for his McDonald's franchises. According to a 1991 interview, Bernardin noted that he "felt there was a void in our menu the adult who wanted a higher ratio of meat to bun." In 1971, Bernardin introduced the first Quarter Pounders at his McDonald's in Fremont using the slogan, "Today Fremont, tomorrow the world." His Quarter Pounder became a success and was added to the national American menu in 1972.

In November 2008, McDonald's Japan (which did not ordinarily offer the Quarter Pounder) converted two Tokyo restaurants into "Quarter Pounder" branded restaurants which only sold Quarter Pounder meals. These promotional branches closed on November 27, 2008 coinciding with the re-introduction of the Quarter Pounder at regular McDonald's branches throughout the Kantō (Tokyo) region from November 28. The Quarter Pounder was launched at one McDonald's restaurant in the Kansai (Osaka) region on December 23, 2008. It was later reported that 15,000 customers had visited the restaurant on the first day, generating a record 10.02 million yen in sales for a single restaurant in one day. However, it was also revealed that McDonald's had hired 1,000 "extras" to queue up on the first day. McDonald's Japan explained that the hirees were used for "product monitoring purposes".
