The 2016–17 season is Nottingham Forest's 151st season in existence and 9th consecutive season in the Championship since promotion in 2007–08. In addition to the Championship, the club participated in the FA Cup and the newly rebranded EFL Cup.

Forest began the season with a new manager, having appointed former Rennes and Real Sociedad manager Philippe Montanier as head coach on 27 June 2016. Montanier was dismissed on 14 January to be replaced on 14 March by former Brentford and Rangers manager Mark Warburton. In the two months between, the club's first team responsibilities were handed to academy manager Gary Brazil and under-23's head coach Jack Lester. The season covers the period from 1 July 2016 to 30 June 2017.

Former Fiorentina sporting director Pedro Pereira was appointed as director of football on 16 June, although he departed the club in October after only four months in the position. Shortly after Pereira's departure Forest's financial director, Lalou Tifrit, also left the club. On 19 January 2017 Samantha Gordon joined Forest in the capacity of chief financial officer, as a direct replacement for Tifrit. On 3 March former Liverpool academy director and Rangers head of recruitment Frank McParland was appointed as the club's director of football, five months after the departure of Pereira.

On Wednesday 22 June 2016, The Football League released the fixture list for the 2016–17 EFL Championship. Forest opened their season at home to newly promoted Burton Albion. The two sides had never before met in a competitive match.
