Breathe is a 2017 biographical drama film directed by Andy Serkis, from a screenplay by William Nicholson. It stars Andrew Garfield, Claire Foy, Hugh Bonneville, Tom Hollander, Ed Speleers and Dean-Charles Chapman, and tells the story of Robin Cavendish, who became paralyzed from the neck down by polio at age 28.
The film had its world premiere at the 42nd Toronto International Film Festival on 11 September 2017. It was released in the United States by Bleecker Street on 13 October 2017, and in the United Kingdom by STXinternational on 27 October 2017.
Robin Cavendish, who was given only three months to live after being paralysed from the neck down by polio at age 28, becomes a pioneering advocate for the disabled. He and his devoted wife, Diana Blacker, travel the world with the hopes of transforming the lives of others like him.
Cavendish's son, Jonathan Cavendish, who runs Imaginarium Productions production company with director Andy Serkis, commissioned writer William Nicholson to write the film's screenplay, and is one of the producers of the film. He stated in an interview with London Evening Standard that in producing the film, he wanted to capture the "swashbuckling band of eccentrics" he knew in his childhood.
