When writing the song, Johnson wanted to capture the excitement of Christmas morning such as "laughing in their sleep / And swimming through dreams into the morning." In the song, it also references Ebeneezer Scrooge when Johnson says "No!Bah! Humbug!"

The song was originally released as "In the Morning" on November 1, 2011. But "In the Morning 2017" was released as a Spotify Streaming single on November 27, 2017. The song was the second single from the playlist, following Miley Cyrus' "Rockin Around the Christmas Tree." Other artists featured on the playlist include George Ezra, Fifth Harmony, Wyclef Jean, Sam Smith, Demi Lovato, Josh Groban, Kelly Clarkson & Norah Jones.

Since the video was recorded live, the video has a live video to accompany it. The original video was released on December 11, 2011 and spawned 1.6 million views on YouTube. The video features Jack, Paula Fuga and John Cruz.
