CIM Chartered Manager Canada is Canada’s senior professional association, certification body and academic institute for managers and leaders. It was founded in 1942 as the Society of Industrial Methods Engineers and in 1946 became the Canadian Industrial Management Association. Becoming a multidisciplinary organization, it became the Canadian Institute of Management in 1970. In 2016 it became CIM Chartered Managers Canada to reflect its role as Canada's certifying body for chartered management professionals.
As a Federally Chartered not-for-profit organization, CIM Chartered Managers Canada operates through 16 chapters across Canada. The Institute has a long history of servicing managers and aspiring managers within Canadian industry. Since its foundation, the Institute has provided professional development and certification to over 80,000 managers and grants two well-recognized professional designations and academic qualifications.
CIM Chartered Managers Canada promotes professional certification and management development, supporting its members through affinity benefits, an online management portal, Management Direct, publishing a widely read quarterly periodical entitled The Canadian Manager, a weekly newsbrief called Management Matters, and an online mentoring program, CONNECTIONS. The CIM also provides a framework for networking and knowledge exchange via its local chapters across the country.
Through the National Accreditation Framework, CIM Chartered Managers Canada accredits academic programs within Canadian colleges, polytechnics and universities as meeting the requirements for the Chartered Management Program (CMP) leading to Chartered Manager (C.Mgr.) and the Certified in Management (C.I.M.) professional designations.
The Chartered Manager Competency Framework outlines to all stakeholders the competencies required to achieve this leading designation in management and leadership. It forms the cornerstone of the management profession in Canada that is equally rigorous and inclusive, and provides academic institutions with the benchmark for the development of effective academic programs that will lead to this professional designation.
