District 4 of the Virginia Senate is a senatorial district that stretches from around Fredericksburg to the Chesapeake Bay located mostly on the Northern Neck. The district encompasses all of Caroline County, Essex County, Middlesex County, Lancaster County, Northumberland County, and Richmond County, and parts of Hanover County, King George County, Spotsylvania County, and Westmoreland County. The current Senator from District 4 is Ryan McDougle.
From 1940 - 1943, the 4th District included the counties of Amherst and Nelson. In 1944, the district was redrawn to also include Bedford County and those boundaries were in place until 1955.
In 1955, the district was redrawn and the district was moved to Southside Virginia and included the counties of Charlotte, Halifax and Prince Edward. This was the configuration of the district until 1966; when the City of South Boston was made an independent city within Halifax County in 1960, it was included in the 4th District. From 1966 - 1972, the district added Lunenburg and Nottaway counties to meet the requirements of the One person, one vote rulings of the U.S. Supreme Court in the Davis v. Mann case.
