League was played by 52 teams in three groups one with 18 teams and two with 17. Ten teams had been promoted from lower league, whereas two had been relegated from upper league. Season was started on 16 August 1987 and ended on 29 May 1988. Top teams in each group promoted to 1988–89 First League, whereas bottom three teams in each group were relegated to 1988–89 Third League at the end of the season.
